Diversity in Parks, Recreation,
and Tourism

This course is designed as an introduction to the responsibilities of public, private, and commercial leisure service delivery systems in relation to their diverse constituents. The objective of this course is to increase students’ awareness and knowledge of the needs of members of ethnic and racial groups, people of diverse socioeconomic status, women, older adults, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and people with disabilities. Moreover, the course introduces students to concepts and factors that influence the delivery of recreation and tourism services to diverse populations.

Diversity Interview

During the course, Hadley had to conduct a diversity interview. She had to connect with someone who differed from her in at least two ways. She met with Raquan Griffin, a Criminal Justice major at Old Dominion University, to discuss differences and similarities in their life experiences.

Diversity Interview Report

After the interview, Hadley then constructed a report comparing the similarities and differences between herself and her interviewee. The purpose of the interview was to have students see how diversity impacts our daily lives and how some students may face obstacles based on one characteristic of their life.
